BASE DESCRIPTION

Hey, what’s up everyone? I’m Dark Barbarian, and welcome back to another base building post.
In this post, we’re building a brand-new Town Hall 5 base, and just like all my other layouts, this one is a hybrid base — meaning it’s designed to protect your loot while also helping you maintain trophies.
If you really want to understand how this base works and why every building is placed the way it is, make sure to see the base analysis instead of just blindly copying it.
Alright, let’s get into the Base Analysis!
As always, the Town Hall is placed right in the center of the base.

That’s because in a hybrid base, protecting your Town Hall is extremely important — it contains a decent amount of loot and is worth one star. Keeping it deep in the core makes it much harder for attackers to reach, which significantly improves your defensive performance.

At Town Hall 5, the Mortar, Wizard Tower, and Air Defense are your most critical defenses, so we’ve positioned them inside the main compartment where they’re well-protected and can stay active for as long as possible.

Mortar is placed in a way that its splash radius covers a large section of the base. It’s excellent against swarm strategies like BARCH, GiBARCH, or Mass Goblins, clearing out low-health troops before they can cause major damage.

Wizard Tower is the only splash-damage defense at TH5 that targets both air and ground. Its range overlaps with the Mortar and nearby defenses, offering solid support coverage and dealing heavy damage to clumped-up ground troops or Balloons.

Air Defense is a key structure at Town Hall 5. Its range covers most of the base, and it can wipe out about 90% of a Balloon’s HP with one hit. When combined with Archer Towers, it becomes a powerful counter to Mass Balloon strategies.
Some of you might be wondering, “What if the attacker uses Lightning Spells to take out the Air Defense?”
Well, at TH5, attackers can only bring two Lightning Spells, which together deal around 480 damage — not nearly enough to destroy high-priority defenses like the Air Defense or Wizard Tower.
That’s why keeping them near the center is safe and ensures they stay active for most of the battle.

The Archer Towers are placed strategically so their coverage overlaps and protects the entire base from all directions, both air and ground.
Meanwhile, Cannons are spread out to provide balanced ground defense and support other defensive structures.

You might notice a Cannon placed outside the walls and wonder why.
At Town Hall 5, you don’t have enough walls to enclose everything, so placing a Cannon outside is actually a strategic choice. As you progress to higher Town Halls, you’ll see this tactic used often.
If an attacker deploys Giants from that side, they’ll target the outside Cannon first since it’s the nearest defense. This delays their push into the base, giving your inner defenses more time to deal damage before the Giants reach the core.
I’ve also placed the storages apart from one another. Grouping all storages together makes it easy for an attacker to take them all out at once.

By spreading them out, the attacker needs to destroy most of the base to get all your loot.
Additionally, we’ve arranged them alternately — so even if one side of the base is destroyed, you won’t lose all storages of the same resource. For example, if all Gold Storages were on one side, the attacker could steal almost all your gold by focusing just there. And if we are losing loot, it is better to lose it in a balanced way rather than losing all of the loot of one kind of resource, so we arrange them alternately, much like our base.
Now coming to the placement of the traps, we have placed those Spring Traps in the most likely path of Giants to take out a few of them and weaken the push.

Bombs are positioned to target Wall Breakers, which can mess up the attacker’s funnel if they’re eliminated before breaking walls.
Air Bombs are carefully placed after analyzing multiple attacks on this base. They help weaken Balloons before they reach the core, making it easier for Air Defense to finish them off.

coming to the outer buildings, I’ve placed collectors and buildings alternately instead of grouping the same type together. Many players overlook this and end up placing all collectors and mines in one spot, making them an easy target.
By spreading them out, attackers will need more time and troops to destroy them, buying you precious time for defense.

One last tip — while this base is strong on its own, it becomes even more effective with Clan Castle troops. At lower Town Halls, they can make a huge difference.
I highly recommend requesting a Baby Dragon or a few Valkyries for defense — they can drastically increase your chances of a successful defense.

One more thing, this base is good enough on its own but make sure you have something in your clan castle for the defense because at lower town halls, defensive clan castle troops are an integral part of the defense, so if you want to boost your success rate, I definitely recommend getting a baby dragon or some valks in your clan castle for defense. that’s it for this post.

BEST DEFENSIVE CLAN CASTLE TROOPS COMBINATIONS
Using clan castle troops for defending your base is highly recommended as they can put the attacker in trouble by distracting them. Even though the base alone is sufficient to stop most of the attacks used by Town Hall 5 attackers, using the clan castle can help a lot. At Town Hall 5 you can get Maximum of 15 housing space in your clan castle, here are some of my recommendations for CC troops combinations for defense at Town Hall 5 :-
- 1 Valkyrie + 1 Wizard + 3 Archers (Recommended)
- 1 Baby Dragon + 1 Wizards + 1 Archers
- 1 Witch + 3 Archers
- 3 Balloons
Since most people can’t get these troops from their clans, you can also use other troop combinations which are easily available like all wizards, all balloons or any other troop combination but I highly recommend you to have above-mentioned troops for the best defensive experience at Town Hall 5.
